Which hair color ingredients are the cause of health risks are the center of a long standing debate. The avoidance of potentially harmful ingredients in permanently coloring hair or significantly changing the color can be hard to accomplish. A common ingredient in many permanent dyes for hair is p-phenylenediamine, also referred to as PPD, has been brought into question. Beauty consultant Mary Beth Janssen, who is also wrote Naturally Healthy Hair, has stated that cancer has been linked to PPD as well as the majority of allergic reactions.

For those who want to color their hair but find the chemicals in widely available dyes and highlighting treatments too harsh, a new crop of products promises to do the trick without causing allergic reactions or other health problems. While green-friendly permanent hair dyes still require some of these chemicals–such as ammonia, peroxide, p-Phenylenediamine or diaminobenzene in order to be effective, alternatives do exist that contain smaller amounts…

Better than any ammonia-based hair color. And without all the unpleasant side effects. The permanent hair color products of Organic Color Systems are only available to professional hair salons. The Organic Color Systems’ range consists of colors, concentrates, lighteners and activators plus a range of salon-only hair care products that you can use with the color range to repair damaged hair. The benefits of this line of organic hair color are: No ammonia. No fumes. No burn or itch. No damage. No Banding. No Hot Roots. No Brassing. No Plastics. No Sulfates. No Parabens. No Animal Testing. No Animal Products. Just unrivalled color and healthier hair. No ammonia. No fumes. No burn or itch. No damage. No Banding. No Hot Roots. No Brassing. No Plastics. No Sulfates. No Parabens. Harsh chemicals should not be needed for temporary hair coloring or highlighting. A couple of short term options are Naturcolor and Vegetel, which do not have chemicals that will cause damage. The effect will last for only a few washes, however.

A temporary dye that is completely natural is henna. It has been known at least since Cleopatra and been used for dying hair and skin for a few thousand years. It is made by crushing the leaves of the Lawsonia desert shrub into powder. As a maker of hair treatments of pure organic ingredients, Rainbow Henna has hair colors that range from black to blonde and all the colors in between. Light Mountain caters to those who are more comfortable with the more familiar home hair dye kits. These hair products are readily available in nearby shops for natural beauty and health supplies. Other products, such as Organic Color Systems, might only be found to be available in hair salons.

Recent studies have given those worried about the traditional hair dyes they use new reasons to switch to less harsh alternatives. A 1994 National Cancer Institute report found that deep-colored dyes (like dark brown and black), when used over prolonged periods of time, seemed to increase the risk of cancers such as non-Hodgkins lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Meanwhile a 2001 study by the International Journal of Cancer found that people who use permanent hair dye are twice as likely to develop bladder cancer as those who go au naturel regarding hair color.
