SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) is a new type of infection that emerged in Asia, North America, and Europe. The illness starts with a high fever (38 degrees Centigrade) accompanied by other symptoms such as headache and body malaise and pains. The symptoms can occur within 2 to seven days then respiratory problems such as whooping cough can develop.
The disease is generally transmitted through direct contact with the infected individual, particularly sexual contact. Ironically, most of the SARS cases happen to the persons who are taking care of SARS patients or those who are living or working together with a SARS suspect. Infection can also take place when coming in contact with contaminated materials or substance such as respiratory secretions from a sneeze of a SARS suspect.
