Building strong relationships, strong values and strong minds. MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM HANDBOOK INTRODUCTION Boyup Brook District High School has a long history of high academic achievement and a culture within the school of high standards, reflecting the community's commitment to excellence in all areas. The Middle School has talented and professional staff who teach predominantly within subject areas, and have a demonstrated commitment to the individual needs of our students. The school consistently performs exceptionally well in State MSE (Monitoring Standards in Education) testing, and national testing in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy. Results from State and National testing demonstrate that the school is above average in student achievement and student progress. Through small classes, combined with teaching and learning programmes devised by experienced teachers, the school has clearly demonstrated over the years that it can extend the academically talented, as well as cater for those students who are at educational risk. Our pastoral care programme offers a range of strategies to provide consistency in caring for individuals and groups of students. We offer a balanced curriculum that provides students with choices within some of the Learning Areas. This handbook provides parents and students with information about the upcoming school year and for 2015 Year 9 and 10 students, information about subjects and selection for 2015. Teachers will discuss the curriculum options offered with students to support them in making appropriate choices, and we encourage you to discuss choices with your child and contact the school for more information if necessary. We also consider the individual needs of students, so are open to discussion of individual pathways for students, even though these may not be detailed in this handbook. We thank you for your support of our school and its programs Anne

WATSON, SHAKEEL AHMED, MUHAMMADASIM and JEFF A. JOHNSON The provision of supplementary food at vulture restaurants is a well-established tool in theconservation of vulture species. Among their many applications, vulture restaurants are used toprovide a safe food source in areas where carcasses are commonly baited with poisons. Rapid andextensive declines of vultures in the Indian subcontinent have been attributed to the toxic effectsof diclofenac, a pharmaceutical used in the treatment of livestock, to which vultures are exposedwhile feeding on the carcasses of treated animals. A vulture restaurant was established at theOriental White-backed Vulture Gyps bengalensis colony at Toawala, in Punjab provincePakistan, to test the effectiveness of the technique in modifying ranging behaviour and mortalityat the colony. Six male vultures were fitted with satellite transmitters to describe variation inmovement and home-range during periods when safe food was alternately available andwithheld at the vulture restaurant. There was considerable variation in individual home-rangesize (minimum convex polygons, MCP, of 1,824 km2 to 68,930 km2), with birds occupyingsmaller home-ranges centred closer to the restaurant being more successful in locating thereliable source of food. Fixes showed that 3 of the tagged vultures fed at the vulture restaurantand the home-range of each bird declined following their initial visit, with a 23–59% reductionin MCP. Mean daily mortality during provisioning was 0.072 birds per day (8 birds in 111 days),compared with 0.387 birds per day (41 birds in 106 days) during non-provisioning controlperiods. Vultures tended to occupy greater home-ranges, cover greater distances each day andspend proportionately more time in the air during the late brooding and post-breeding seasons.Attendance at the vulture restaurant also declined during this period with fewer birds visitingless often and no tagged vultures visiting the vulture restaurant at all. These findings indicatethat vulture restaurants can reduce, but not eliminate, vulture mortality through diclofenacexposure and represent a valuable interim measure in slowing vulture population decline locallyuntil diclofenac can be withdrawn from veterinary use.

Balancing Brain Chemistry to Treat Depression By Liz Butler This article first appeared in CAM magazine Introduction It is taking a long time for the scientific community to fully accept that what a person eats can influence their mental state but in the last few decades progress in this area has been rapid. Taking a very basic view of the subject there can be no doubt that nutrition is intimately involved with mental health as the brain and its chemical messengers are ultimately derived from food. Convincing doctors used to the traditional approach of treating mental disturbance and depression (drugs or psychotherapy) to consider the nutritional treatment approach is more difficult than simply pointing out this fact. Fortunately there is now a large amount of research supporting the view that nutrition has a role to play in promoting mental health, this article will review some of this research. It is well established that neurotransmitter imbalances can lead to mental dysfunction and depression and in fact most drugs currently being used in this area of disease aim to restore chemical balance within the nervous system (1). As some of the research mentioned in this review shows, certain nutritional factors may be able to promote chemical normality in the same way as current pharmaceutical treatments but without the side effects associated with drug therapy. Within a discussion about depression there must be some mention of genetic factors as there is no denying that the risk of developing depression, particularly a severe form, is influenced by genetics (2). It is likely that certain people are born with a predisposition to biochemical imbalances within the brain and then an inadequate nutrient intake compounds the problem. Eventually the situation deteriorates until there is expression of disease. What this means however, is that even disease with a genetic component may possibly be reversed given the correct nutrients to balance brain chemistry. Brain chemistry The brain is composed of about 100 billion neurones, the cells of the nervous system that communicate messages to each other, making up what is termed grey matter. The processes that extend from the cells to meet up with other cells constitute the white matter of the brain. Amongst the neurones are cells called neuroglia. Their role is to support, protect, and repair the neurones. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that pass between neurones relaying messages. Examples include acetylcholine, histamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin. All of these are well-studied neurotransmitters, and the effects of too much, or too little on the mental state are well observed. In addition neuromodulators and neurohormones are further classes of chemicals that affect nervous function. Neuromodulators modulate signal transmission either pre- or post-synaptically and neurohormones behave like neurotransmitters but act at a site distant

Contrary to what was generally believed, it is now clear that distinct cell types expressing unique receptors are tuned to detect each of the five basic tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. Importantly, receptor cells for each taste quality function as dedicated sensors wired to elicit stereotypic responses.

Maya Mundkur Greer, MSN, APRN, BC The pinworm, or Enterobius vermicularis, is a parasite that commonly infects the intestines of humans. The male is 2 to 5 millimeters long and lives in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Females can be twice as long as males. Eggs take 1 to 2 months to mature in the gastrointestinal tract and become large enough to migrate. Pregnant females typically migrate to the rectal area to lay eggs, often during the night. Pinworms may also deposit their eggs along the perineum and even in the vagina. The females usually die after depositing their eggs.

Noun Compound Interpretation Using Paraphrasing Verbs: Feasibility Study Preslav Nakov?? Linguistic Modeling Department, Institute for Parallel Processing, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences 25A, Acad. G. Bonchev St., 1113 Sofia, Bulgaria Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University, 5, James Bourchier Blvd., 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria Abstract. The paper addresses an important challenge for the auto-matic processing of English written text: understanding noun compounds'semantics. Following Downing (1977) , we define noun compounds assequences of nouns acting as a single noun, e.g., bee honey, apple cake, stem cell, etc. In our view, they are best characterised by the set of allpossible paraphrasing verbs that can connect the target nouns, with as-sociated weights, e.g., malaria mosquito can be represented as follows:carry (23), spread (16), cause (12), transmit (9), etc. These verbs are di-rectly usable as paraphrases, and using multiple of them simultaneouslyyields an appealing fine-grained semantic representation. In the present paper, we describe the process of constructing such rep-resentations for 250 noun-noun compounds previously proposed in thelinguistic literature by Levi (1978) . In particular, using human sub-jects recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk Web Service, we createa valuable manually-annotated resource for noun compound interpreta-tion, which we make publicly available with the hope to inspire furtherresearch in paraphrase-based noun compound interpretation. We furtherperform a number of experiments, including a comparison to automat-ically generated weight vectors, in order to assess the dataset qualityand the feasibility of the idea of using paraphrasing verbs to characterisenoun compounds' semantics; the results are quite promising.

nature publishing group The CYP3A4*18 Genotype in the Cytochrome P450 3A4 Gene, a Rapid Metabolizer of Sex Steroids, Is Associated With Low Bone Mineral DensityYS Kang1, SY Park1, CH Yim1, HS Kwak1, P Gajendrarao2, N Krishnamoorthy2, S-C Yun3, KW Lee2 and KO Han1 Osteoporosis is influenced by genetic factors. The interindividual variability in the activity of CYP3A, the metabolic enzyme of sex hormones, may result from genetic polymorphisms. In a study of 2,178 women of ages 40–79 years, the presence of the CYP3A4*18 variant was found to be significantly associated with low bone mass. In vitro functional analyses indicate that CYP3A4*18 is a gain-of-function mutation in sex steroid metabolism, resulting in rapid oxidation of estrogens and testosterone; in vivo pharmacokinetics using midazolam (MDZ) verify the altered activity of the CYP3A4*18, showing lower metabolic turnover in the mutant than in the wild type. Molecular modeling reveals the structural changes in the substrate recognition sites of CYP3A4*18 that can cause changes in enzymatic activity and that potentially account for the difference between the catalytic activities of estrogen and MDZ, depending on the genotype. The results indicate that a genetic variation in the CYP3A4 gene—as a gain-of-function mutation in the metabolism of certain CYP3A substrates, including sex steroids—may predispose individuals to osteoporosis.
