Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) refers to a condition in which a person shows a variety of symptoms such as abdominal pain, excess gas, constipation, diarrhea and bloating caused due to contraction of colon muscles. IBS affects almost 20% of the total population of the United States. It is a disease diagnosed by a gastroenterologist.
IBS is one of the most functional and common gastrointestinal disorder. It is known to affect women more than men. Women constitute more than 70% of the total population suffering from IBS.
IBS is among those diseases which cause great interference in a person’s life. It affects the daily schedule of a person. There are various symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
The classic and landmark IBS symptom is the abdominal pain. A person suffering from this disease experiences extreme pain in abdominal area. He also feels great discomfort in his abdominal area. This is due to the fact that IBS has its roots in the bowel, so it affects the bowels of a person the most.
Another very prominent symptom of IBS is characterized by constipation. Constipation is a condition in which people find it hard and difficult to pass stool. In some cases of constipation a person does not pass stool for the whole day. Person suffering from IBS experience this condition often.
IBS on the contrary make a person suffer from extremely reverse condition of constipation. This condition is known as diarrhea. A person suffering from diarrhea experiences frequent loose stools. The frequency of these stools can become increased as the diarrhea worsens. This disease makes a person lose all his nutrients and the person becomes thin. A person can also die, if not given a proper treatment on time. On an average, a person suffering from IBS alternately suffers from both constipation and diarrhea.
Another symptom of irritable bowel syndrome is bloating. Bloating is a condition which is characterized by severe gas accumulation. This makes a person feel constant pressure inside his abdomen. Bloating restricts the activity of a person and makes him frustrated. With a feeling of heaviness in his abdomen, he is not able to concentrate on his work or on any other activity.
Another unique symptom of irritable bowel syndrome is passing of mucus along with stool. People suffering from this disease often feel an urge to move their bowels. When they do so mucus also gets passed along with the stool.
A person suffering from IBS suffers from panic attacks and heart palpations. These symptoms are the scariest of all. Heart palpations often make a person think that he is going to suffer from a heart attack or heart stroke.
Another common feeling with which people suffer during irritable bowel syndrome is that they have not finished their bowel movement. They always feel that they have been unable to pass a full bowel movement and constantly feel heaviness in their stomach. This makes them irritable and frustrated. This feeling accompanies them every time they pass stool, no matter how many times.
People also suffer from headache and weight loss during IBS.
As a person witnesses any of these symptoms, he should consult a physician immediately, to prevent IBS from getting severe.
