At present many different types of medicines are available in the market to help you stop smoking. Some of these can be obtained from the counter while the others must be prescribed. Here is an honest review of the various medications which are available to help us quit smoking.

With the advancement of science and technology, several methods have been developed to stop smoking. Of course, the most popular of these methods still remain the oral medicines, as these are quite easy to consume and most of them show good effects in curbing the habit. But not all of them can be branded as safe. Before taking any stop smoking medication, it is important that you know their pros and cons fully well.

Among the popular stop smoking medications being used today are included NicVAX, varenicline, bupropion in addition to the herbal remedies. Let us learn more about these medications.

Nicvax is a vaccination from nicotine itself. This is injected into the smoker’s bloodstream when the person smokes. The molecules of Nicvax gets mixed with those of the nicotine and becomes heavier. Heavy molecules cannot enter the brain. Hence because of this the problem of effects of nicotine addiction is not felt, especially as they do not gain entry into the central nervous system. A lot of health professionals feel that this is probably the best medication to help stop smoking. This is because the medicine combats the addictive properties and once the person is rid of the addiction he/she will never need to get back to cigarettes and smoking.

However, some people feel NicVAX would not be very successful in people who are very heavy smokers. If such people even take NicVAX, there is a potential danger that they might go on smoking more cigarettes just because they do not feel the punch as before. So, instead of reducing the smoking habit, there is a very great chance that NicVAX might actually aggravate the problem. Yet, there are tests being conducted and so far they have only shown positive results for NicVAX.

Varenicline - This is a well known prescription medicine, popularly known as Champix in Europe and Chantix in US. This is manufactured by Pfizer and is the first nicotine receptor agonist and it works in two ways. At first it decreases the smokers craving for another cigarette and then it helps to cure to damage that smoking has already caused to the body. It has the ability to stop the addiction that a person has for smoking. This is why Varenicline is popularly used to quit smoking.

Nevertheless, Varenicline has some unpleasant side effects on the body. Headaches, vomiting and nausea may occur. A few may discover that their sensation has changed taste when using Varenicline.

Buproprion - The market name of Buproprion is Wellbutrin. As a medication to quit smoking it is well known for its antidepressant properties. It is extremely useful for a person who is thinking of quitting smoking. The chances of the person giving up fully on smoking are high if the depression is kept out.

Buproprion when taken in excess can cause eating disorders like bulimia, nervosa and anorexia. There are also proofs that intake of excess buproprion can cause epilepsy in the long run. This drug is not prescribed to those who already have medical conditions like high blood pressure, kidney ailments and cirrhosis.

Herbal remedies - From the early century herbal remedies have been used as a cure to quit smoking. But only recently they are being sold as formulations. One of the best herbal remedies that are available today is SmokeRX. As suggested these herbal medicines contain herbs. And they also act fast. The effects of SmokeRX can be seen within a week.

Thus as you have seen every medication that helps stop smoking and is available in the shops have both advantages and disadvantages. It is probably because of this that many smokers are afraid to take up these medicines and are instead looking for alternative solutions to help get rid of their habit.
