31. TCS Enables Connected Products Landscapes: a CIMdata Commentary
The growth of complexity in products in recent years has been relentless and is accelerating.
Embedded electronics and software within products is a key driver of additional complexity. Using
embedded technology gives manufacturers a new way to add capabilities with enormous profit
potential, but it is forcing them to work differently. CIMdata has always viewed electronics and
software as an integral part of the product definition, but in most companies, mechanical,
electronics, and software are usually designed in a loosely coupled manner, if not in disconnected
silos. Integrating all aspects of the product definition is becoming necessary to compete in most
markets.
A simple example of the growing complexity is the automotive ignition key. Historically it
consisted of a flat piece of metal and a big advancement was to mold plastic on one end to serve
as a handle. Today's key fob is a complex electro-mechanical device responsible for
authentication and security via secure wireless signals. Manufacturers are now able to produce
identical key fob assemblies and program each of them to work only with a single vehicle. In the
old days unique physical keys needed to be manufactured for each car.
A much more complex example is the autonomous or self-driving car. Automation needs to take
over many functions that previously were done by humans. The advancement to making
autonomous decisions in real-time based on the unpredictable environment external to the car is
huge. And it has to be perfect or the autonomous vehicles will not be accepted.

Oracle's PLM Cloud Connects Product Master Data from Ideation to Commercialization: a CIMdata Commentary Key takeaways : Oracle PLM manages the creation, maintenance, and governance of the Common Product Model which includes the complete definition of a product or item end to end from ideation to commercialization and extends that definition to include all the operational attributes and constructs needed for to support ERP, SCM, and CRM PLM Cloud provides flexible entry to managing product data in the cloud through innovation, development, and commercialization PLM Cloud enables social product development by connecting social input to product definition for long term traceability A common product approach enables data harmonization across PLM, ERP, and SCM More than ever, there is a heavy emphasis on innovation and ideation within product development companies. There is fresh energy around entrepreneurship and empowering collaborative innovation. From Kickstarters to the well-established, everyone is looking at how to redefine products and services with outside-the-box thinking. Yet capturing ideas, sharing ideas, and qualifying ideas in order to create new products is increasingly challenging without the proper DSD Newsletter No. 352, 20.05.2016 Page 8 of 12 tools to help convert those ideas into products. With Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Cloud, Oracle has made significant strides in connecting innovation to the ultimate product commercialization. The challenge today is that innovation is no longer happening on a napkin at a restaurant by co-located personnel. The ability to capture, retain, and execute on this information is often lost or fails to be seen by decision makers. 41. Wipro Unites Software Development with PLM: a CIMdata Commentary Key takeaways: Software increasingly has become the technology differentiator in today's complex products—without integrating software into the product development process, product launches can become market failures Integrated Product Development Lifecycle should be tool agnostic and able to use existing installed toolsets that are already in production, rather than requiring a rip-and-replace approach Wipro has developed an holistic and product agnostic framework uniting software development into PLM Over the last few decades, manufactured products have become increasingly "smart," driving growth in the level of embedded electronics and software. The ubiquity of Internet access and the availability of cheap sensors and computing power make it easy to connect these smart products to drive new value for customers, enable innovative business models, and help manufacturing companies learn how their products are actually used and perform in the field. Based on CIMdata's consulting experience, many industrial companies are still struggling to adopt the technologies and processes necessary to make smart, connected products. Traditionally, PLM has been more focused on the mechanical elements of a product with software development running a parallel, disjointed process, shown in Figure 1. As products became smart, the embedded software was developed using other tools, sometimes licensed, but often open source. That software routinely became part of the bill of material (BOM) by attaching a .zip or .tar archive to the mechanically oriented BOM. Just as PLM evolved from authoring tools and data and process management, tools for software development evolved to support authoring, configuration management, change management, workflow, and other capabilities under the application lifecycle management (ALM) umbrella . 42. Matereality v10 Released for CAD, CAE, PLM ITHACA, NY, May 18, 2016 – Matereality's Version 10 release provides new software components for its enterprise installations, including bulk data loading capabilities and enhanced material parameter conversion support for LS-DYNA and Altair RADIOSS software. The release delivers tools to manage the CAD/PLM/CAE materials workflow, customize role-specific user experiences, and expands the authorship layer for creating and disseminating technical documentation. Data Import: Company data is often contained in many isolated tables and databases which must be consolidated into the enterprise-wide system. This tedious process, a hurdle for enterprise-wide adoption, is greatly eased with the Simple Loader, a new app which enables bulk loading of tables of single-point property data from Excel, greatly speeding up the capture of large quantities of data. It is now possible to rapidly populate a materials database with relevant information of the enterprise. In addition to importing property data, bulk loaders are available to import lists of materials and specifications to Matereality's data libraries, making them more complete and meaningful. Material Model Parameter Conversion: Incorporating a new software framework, Matereality v10 handles increased demand for material model parameter conversion. Support for LS-DYNA MAT_089 and MAT_019 is now available with graphical drag-and-drop capability to tune and extrapolate plasticity curves as well as rate-dependency parts of these models. Support for Altair's RADIOSS explicit solver has also been initiated with a CAE Modeler module for its commonly used Law 36. "We continue to devote resources to this important task of incorporating materials into simulation, bringing years of DatapointLabs experience to simplify this complex and sometimes confusing process," says Hubert Lobo, DatapointLabs founder and Matereality CTO. "For those of our clients who perform their own parameter conversion, a standard export from our software allows them to locate the right data and supply it to their own macros for streamlined data processing."
